We’re currently sitting in our new office, in our brand new space, listening to the click-clacking of the new kitchen being installed and we couldn’t be happier! Robin & Sue Photography and Styling has moved, but we did not move far. Our new space is in the next town over from where we were before (now in Maplewood, formerly in South Orange.) The space will be finalized around the third week of August. Having multiple spaces for product, food, and lifestyle images is going to change so much for us. We cannot wait to reveal the final images when it’s done!
Ok. This background. I’m losing my sh*t over this beautiful color, this stunning backdrop that we ordered (among many) from Club Backdrops. Immediately, Sue and I had to drop some contrasting colors on it and shoot. Oranges. Yes. Blood oranges. YES. A gorgeous moody looking salad with fennel and mint. Yes yes yes. I want to dive inside this color. Wrap myself in it. I’d marry it if I could. This recipe is not our own. Epicurious came up with this gem. It was delicious and the perfect balance of sweetness and earthiness that hit the spot on the (finally) hot day we had here. So, sometimes it starts as basic as a rich color to inspire what comes next. Background color + a contrasting color in food + soft, one directional lighting with no bounce = one happy team :)
Oh and here’s a cool thing: if you use this link, you’ll get an extra backdrop free! A sweet deal for sure.
I know I’m not the only one who freaks out over ramps. To me, it signifies the end of a really long winter and the beginning of everything that I love. I’m an avid trail runner and over time, have gotten to know the top secret place on my local trails with fields of ramps (and no, I’m not telling you where they are!) But instead, I WILL tell you the recipe for this gorgeous tart made by none other than my sassy stylist, Sue.
Often in the studio, Sue and I need something easy, fast, healthy and tasty. Enter this kick *ss toast. We both love sourdough (Sue even makes her own!) so all that’s needed are two toasted pieces of that gorgeous bread, some spicy hummus (we love Sesame brand’s spicy jalapeno), thinly sliced cucumbers and radishes, and we’re tinned fish girls here, so smoked trout for the win. Don’t forget about the pickled onion and crunchy salt! High protein, crunchy veggies, and gorgeous. Basically my requirements for a solid lunch :)
Sue knows I’m a daily smoothie girl, but I hate to admit that I’m usually drinking it on the go. But once in a while I have the luxury of sitting down and enjoying. These are the days I turn my smoothie into a smoothie bowl and take the time to stop, breathe, and eat before the hectic day. But this is no regular smoothie, it’s packed full of quality ingredients needed to get you through the day. And as not only a photographer but an endurance athlete, a good, high-protein breakfast that sustains me for the morning is a non-negotiable.
Very Berry (high protein) Smoothie Bowl
serves 2
Blend in a high-speed blender:
2 cups soy milk (or any milk you prefer)
2 T chia seeds
2 T hemp seeds
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I trust Thorne products)
optional: 1 T Sunbutter (or almond, or peanut)
1-2 washed leaves of kale or a handful of spinach
frozen banana, cut into pieces
1 cup frozen assorted berries
1 cup water if needed to blend, but keep it thicker for your smoothie bowl
Place in a bowl top with:
granola, more fruit, oats, chia, nuts, coconut flakes…whatever makes you happy!
Sue and I cannot WAIT until the spring markets are in full swing. We go crazy thinking about all the dishes we can dream up with the variety of vibrant produce. Here’s one to get us started (even though the weather presently in April has been in the 30s!)
This is our favorite soup for winter warmth.
